Pat Flynn became involved in affiliate marketing in an unusual way. When he created his first blog, he wasn’t trying to earn money.
He was busy studying for an architecture exam, and built the blog as a way of keeping track of his notes while he was studying.
“I found that putting my notes online was the best way to give myself the best chance of passing this exam … The organization structure of a blog allowed me to organize the notes in a way that was easily accessible,” he says.
He traveled a lot and found it easy to study from the blog and also share those notes with co-workers.
After passing the exam, Pat didn’t touch the site for a few months. Then suddenly he was laid off. So he decided to see if he could turn his blog into a business.
He used Google Analytics to look at his traffic and was surprised to discover that thousands of people around the world were already using his site to help them pass the architecture exam.
So he placed AdSense ads on the site.
But he didn’t stop there.
Next, he wrote an ebook for exam students, created other affiliate sites, and kept on growing…
Now he makes a profit of more than $50,000 a month, from AdSense, affiliate commissions and product sales.
